Let me get this off my chest.
We don’t deserve this book.
After all the vitriol that has spread through the fandom since ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, we are now getting spoiled by getting this fantastic novelisation.
Now, as the title of this post states, this is a Spoiler Free review. By that I mean I won’t be spoiling the book, and I will write candidly about the film.
Firstly, Rae Carson has written the perfect novelisation of the film. Not only does she follow the film’s narrative perfectly (with a few scenes moved around but that’s probably down to the final edit of the film) she also dives into the character’s thoughts and feelings giving us readers a chance to better understand motivations and decisions that they make on their journey.
Carson does make some additions to the story, at least one known deleted scene appears in the book, we also get some extra moments with some characters which help to flesh out storylines and also give us some insight. There is one moment in particular that is so powerfully written that it makes a brilliant moment in the film even better, and I won’t lie, almost reduced me to a bawling wreck.
Carson shows that she understands the characters and really draws their storylines out more, her handling of Poe is superb, I loved every moment of him in the novel and never once thought he wasn’t being portrayed correctly. In fact I never thought that about any of the characters.
The novel does give us answers to some of the questions that we had after seeing the film, some clarifications in parts which I would have liked to see in the film but got cut either for time or pacing, we get here and for me it enriches the story, much like Jason Fry did for ‘The Last Jedi’ with is novelisation, especially the scene of Luke running to the village on Ahch-To to tell Rey he was going to go with them only on encounter Rey and Kylo doing the hand thing. Thanks to that book, that scene resonates more with me now than before and Carson gives us so much more insight to ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ that I can’t wait to rewatch it with all of the extra knowledge gained from this book.
I can’t recommend this book enough, to fans and non-fans of the film. Not only because the added details really do help to answer some of those questions that many of us had after seeing the film, but because Rae Carson has given us a superb novel that works on many levels.
I’ll be doing some more Spoiler-Filled content on the novel in the near future so keep an eye out for that coming up, and I’ll be talking about the novel on the next episode of the ‘Life Debt Podcast’.
