After almost a year of speculation, we finally know the truth.
‘Project Luminous’ has been revealed to be a publishing campaign, officially titled ‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ and will focus on the Jedi Order 200 years prior to the events of ‘The Phantom Menace’.
The first wave of stories is set to start hitting shelves on 25th August with Charles Soule’s novel ‘Light of the Jedi’.
This will be followed on 8th September by Justina Ireland’s ‘A Test of Courage’ middle-grade book.
This will be followed by Claudia Gray’s Young Adult novel ‘Into the Dark’ on 13th October.
On the comics side, Daniel José Older is working on ‘Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures’ for IDW.
And at Marvel Comics, Cavan Scott will be writing the ‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ series.
“We are so excited to be opening up such a rich, fertile era for our authors to explore,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “We’ll get to see the Jedi in their prime.”
“Star Wars: The High Republic features the Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them — as true guardians of peace and justice. This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic are at their height. But of course, into this glorious new era something wicked this way comes,” says Lucasfilm publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This initiative will give readers young and old a new corner of the galaxy to explore through rich, meaningful stories. Plus, readers will learn what scares the Jedi.”
“This was a golden age for the Jedi, and also a time of galactic expansion in the Outer Rim. So expect there to be rich tales of exploration; charting out the galaxy, meeting new cultures, and discovering what pioneer life in the Outer Rim was like. This is an incredible sandbox for our storytellers to play in, both within publishing and beyond, and we can’t wait to see the great fiction they build within it,” says Lucasfilm vice president, franchise content and strategy James Waugh.
Added details about the series were also touched upon in a video, which is available HERE.
Rumours about this being kicked off by a Video Game or leading into the next wave of films have yet to be confirmed, but from the sounds of it, ‘The High Republic’ will not be touched on by any of the upcoming films, which I think, honestly is a good idea. Keeping this era to the books/comics will make this Era accessible to those who want it and not encompass the entirety of the franchise.
This era will also give us our beat look at the Jedi as we have always wanted to see them, the “Guardians of peace and justice” that we didn’t quite get in the Prequel Trilogy, before the Sith rose again, as The Republic expanded, with new heroes and new threats.
I am so excited for this to start in August. This was the kind of thing I have been hoping to get for years since the Disney purchase, the level of storytelling here is unprecedented, we got it a handful of times in the days of the old ‘EU’ with ‘Shadows of the Empire’ and the various series released, such as ‘The New Jedi Order’ but this seems to be on a much grander scale, with multiple publishing arms all working together, I jus wonder who they’ll get to do the soundtrack.
