Star Wars: Allegiance Part 1 – An Old Hope Review

Writer – Ethan Sacks

Colourist – Lee Loughridge

Letterer – VC’s Clayton Cowles

‘Star Wars: Allegiance’ is Marvel’s addition you the ‘Journey to the Rise of Skywalker’ and tells a story that will lead into the event of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.

This first issue mainly follows the heroes of the Resistance as they look for much needed allies and weapons.

After the destruction of an entire neutral race at the hands of The First Order, Leia decides that it is time to seek help. She takes C-3PO, R2-D2, Rose, Connix, Chewie and Rey to Mon Cala.

Meanwhile Finn, Poe and BB-8 are looking for a location of a hidden New Republic stronghold that supposedly contains weapons. Whilst Poe gets the info, Finn ends up in a bar fight with a rather large opponent. The fight ends after BB-8 gets more of the bar’s clientele involved in the ruckus. As they leave, a disguised Bounty Hunter recognises Finn and they get in touch with The First Order.

When Leia and co. arrive at Mon Cala they are met by a group of Quarren who threaten to kill Leia.

As a first part of a mini-series it does a great job setting up the characters and their separate missions but as a first part it doesn’t have much in the way of story. It’s just the set up.

What we do learn is that The Resistance are desperate, looking for safe places to hide. The First Order are searching for the Resistance and wiping out anyone who may have help them. Kylo Ren and Hux are at odds, but the chain of command dictates that Hux obeys the new Supreme Leader.

We don’t know exactly where in the timeline this is set but if I were to hazard a guess I would say it’s closer to ‘The Last Jedi’ given the fact that Rey isn’t using the Lightsaber, the Falcon doesn’t have us radar dish and Finn’s hair hasn’t quite grown to ‘TROS’ length.

The writing is solid and the art is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to get the next issue.
