“In fiction, a MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin) is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrativeexplanation. The MacGuffin’s importance to the plot is not the object itself, but rather its effect on the characters and their motivations.”
WARNING! POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
As it has been reported by MAKINGSTARWARS.NET the plot of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ follows a series of adventures where the main characters are searching for a MacGuffin. There has been a lot of speculation on it and then we got the Death Star wreckage and Palpatine’s laugh in the Teaser back at Celebration Chicago.
I have since heard and read podcasts and comments asking this if Palpatine is the MacGuffin then why are they putting him in the promotional material this early. My thoughts on this are three-fold, firstly they don’t want it leaking. Secondly, who else isn’t hyped up even more knowing that Palpatine is returning in some capacity, and thirdly, MacGuffin’s are (as quoted above) a plot device, the end goal of the film. Take a look at ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ it’s a hunt for the Holy Grail. That’s the plot, the story is a whole different thing. It’s a story about a father and son reconnecting which at its core is a more interesting story. We all know that Indiana Jones will find the Grail. He found the Ark of the Covenant and the Shankara Stones in the two previous movies and will inevitably lose them. These are the tropes of the franchise.
Now thinking about ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ if Palpatine is the MacGuffin then knowing that now is no bad thing. If the main characters are looking for him and we already know that we can focus on, and enjoy the story without having this huge surprise at the end which would, inevitably become the big focal point for fans on the initial viewing rather than enjoying the story for what it is.
However, this is of course speculation and I could be completely, utterly and horribly wrong. And I can live with that as I like to speculate responsibly.
