“Episode IX will be the end of the Skywalker Saga.”
We have been hearing those words for a while now haven’t we? How Episode IX was going to not only conclude the Sequel Trilogy, but the whole nine-film saga that started in 1977.
But what does it mean? The end of the Skywalker Saga? Well, to me it means the Saga, about a family called ‘Skywalker’ is reaching its conclusion, quite possibly with the remaining members of the family, Leia and Ben, being killed off.
It’s no secret that the Skywalker bloodline has brought nothing but pain to the Galaxy, through the actions of all three generations the Galaxy has been at war for almost seventy years. The last full scale war, according to Solo Bibble in ‘Attack of the Clones’ was during the formation of the Republic which was around a thousand years prior to the events of that film. The Skywalker family has been central to three wars, The Clone Wars, The Galactic Civil War and The First Order/Resistance Conflict, surely if the bloodline continued, based on past events, the wars would carry on.
So if the Skywalker bloodline ends, then what does the title ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ mean? Does it refer to a person? If so is it Ben? Whilst his name is Ben Solo but he has that ‘mighty Skywalker blood.’ Does he rise from his place in the First Order and the Dark Side to the Light? It’s possible, but then how does that mean the end of the Skywalker Saga if the most conflicted member of that family is still around? Is it Rey? Is she related to them? Is she Luke’s daughter? A secret child of Han and Leia? Whilst I highly doubt it, none of us can say we never once considered her to be the daughter off Luke or Leia.
One of the big theories is that by the end of the film, Rey will be training a new generation of Force users and rather than continuing to call themselves Jedi after the negative connotations that it could bring up and as a mark of respect, they are called Skywalkers, and I wouldn’t consider this at being far-fetched, seeing that in canon, Force Sensitive Chiss children are called ‘Skywalkers’ because they use their powers to navigate hyperspace in the Unknown Regions.
Of course this is all speculation and it will be seven months until we know the outcome, maybe one of these theories will be right. Maybe not, but I can’t wait to find out.
