On the Monday of Star Wars Celebration, at the Author’s Round Table Panel which featured Authors Claudia Grey, Cavan Scott, Daniel Jose Older, Charles Soule and Justina Ireland, it was announced that the five of them were all working on a super-secret project called ‘Project Luminous’ which will be out next year.
Speculation has ranged from an Empire Strikes Back themed ‘From A Certain Point Of View’ book of short stories set during the events of the film, much like the one we got in 2017 for the 40th Anniversary of ‘A New Hope’. Others believe it will be a book of novellas like ‘Canto Bight’ that focus’ on the Jedi (the logo has the Jedi Symbol incorporated in it) or a series of novels/comics based around an idea or that tell one long story a la ‘The New Jedi Order’.
Personally, I think we will get something akin to the latter, except it will all be novels and they will tell a story or a series of stories set during a specific time period. On a recent episode of the ‘Tumbling Saber’ PODCAST the hosts speculated that it could be about Luke Skywalker set between the Original and Sequel trilogies. Others believe it could tell stories set before The Phantom Menace.
Personally I wonder if they will tell stories set in between ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ and tell stories about Force Sensitive individuals across the Galaxy during the Resistance/First Order War.
But in all honesty, I would love to see stories from all of these time periods, so whatever we get I’m happy, and whilst I haven’t read anything from Justina Ireland, just looking at the caliber of Authors, especially Claudia Grey and Charles Soule who have written highly acclaimed Star Wars stories and Older and Scott have a history with the franchise, I am expecting great things.
Whatever ‘Project Luminous’ is, Lucasfilm Publishing is taking it very seriously, the authors have all been part of workshops at Skywalker Ranch and worked together during two working trips to the home of Star Wars, watching new 4K cuts of ‘A New Hope’ and ‘Empire Strikes Back’, gone through the Lucasfilm Library and more to make sure this project goes well.
At the panel we were told that more information would be released ‘soon’ and my eye is on San Diego Comic-Con where there is usually a Star Wars book panel, or New York Comic-Con at the very latest.
Whilst the big screen Star Wars looks to be slowing down for a year or so, at least we can look forward to this and the Disney+ content and whatever else Lucasfilm wants to throw our way.
