According to just about every press release/announcement for anything ‘Episode IX’ related, the film marks the end of the ‘Skywalker Saga’. But what does that mean?
Is it the end of the episodic films? Hopefully not, I think it would be a bad move to close the door on the episodic series, maybe in ten years we could pick it up again with any of the surviving (new) main characters from the series, and hopefully the surviving secondary characters (better not kill off Chewie).
Will Leia be killed off? I’m sure of it. I have a few theories about the Skywalker family and the impact of them on the galaxy and the Balance of the Force. I get the feeling that even if Carrie Fisher hadn’t passed away that the character would meet her end in this film, Leia has spent her life fighting evil in the Galaxy and it would make sense that with the end of the Imperial/First Order rule that Leia would give her life to see the battle won.
Will Kylo Be Redeemed? Quite possibly. It’s a Star Wars trope and so it would be rather odd if it didn’t happen, will it be through Rey? Maybe not. What if it’s through Leia? Better yet what if Leia and Ben die together? We need to admit it to ourselves, for the Skywalker Saga to end we need to have no more Skywalkers. People could say “But Ben is a ‘Solo’!” Well technically, yes but Luke says it himself when he’s talking to Rey about Ben, “That mighty Skywalker blood.” Sorry folks, Kylo gotta go. And what better way that to be in his mother’s arms as everything explodes around them, the final moments of the Skywalker lineage. Of course there’s the Force Ghost Luke, and maybe by the end of the film he fades away into the Force, never to be seen again.
Who will get killed off? I think in this one, no one is safe. It’s going to be an all out war, battles all over the place, we can’t assume that all of the heroes will make it out alive. There’s speculation that Chewie will get killed. NO! Chewie will survive, so will R2 and 3PO, and of course BB-8, these are all characters that can be played by anyone. Sure 3PO and Anthony Daniels are one and the same, but if the character was to come back it could be any other actor in the suit and have Daniels do the voice. But Rey, Finn, Poe, Hux, Kylo, Leia and even Lando are all in the crosshairs this time around.
Whilst it’s hard to even contemplate what Episode IX will bring us in terms of story, one thing is certain, J.J. Abrams has a lot of work to do to bring the nine film story of the Skywalker family to a satisfying ending, and I have faith that he will deliver.
