As I have recently gotten back into gaming after getting a new XBox One S I’ve gone and gotten back into Battlefront 2 in a big bad way.
There will be spoilers for the game so be warned if you haven’t played it yet.
The result of this is I will now do some writing about each of the levels as I make my way through the game. This time I will go through Mission 10 – The Battle of Jakku.
The Premise – After receiving orders from Admiral Ackbar, The Corvus arrives at Jakku in the midst of battle. Iden and Shriv take their X-Wings to help in the air battle whilst Del directs them to help in different areas.
The first, a Battalion if New Republic troops has been shot down and can’t get evacuated until the approaching AT-AT’s are destroyed. Iden and Shriv fight their way to some dropped equipment that allows them to call for Orbital Bombardment. Once the Walkers are destroyed and the Imperial reinforcements are defeated, Del arrives in the Corvus to take them to their intended target, an Imperial Research Station.
The second part of the mission takes Iden and Shriv to a crashed Star Destroyer to blow it up to stop it from releasing its remaining TIE Bombers. Once in the wrecked ship they fight their way through Stormtroopers to get the explosives and set them in the Bomber bay. They are cut off by more reinforcements but escape to their ships in time to witness the explosion.
On their way back to The Corvus, they come under attack from Admiral Versio’s Star Destroyer and Hask in his TIE Interceptor and Iden has to fight him ship-to-ship and is ultimately triumphant.
The Gameplay – The mission has a great mix of ground and air combat. No gimmicks, no walk and talks, no hero moments, just a pure, straightforward mission and you get to play with a new toy, Orbital Bombardment, which is somewhat lacklustre when trying to take down AT-AT’s and needing three attacks on each to succeed, although it does build tension.
Easter Eggs – It’s the Battle of Jakku, as featured in Chuck Wendig’s ‘Star Wars: Empire’s End’. The Imperial Research Station the Troops are heading to is ‘The Observatory’ where Gallius Rax is planning on completing Palpatine’s contingency plan to wipe out the majority of the Empire so it can be reborn one day.
A solid mission and it’s great fun to actually be a part of the most significant battle seen, so far in a couple of books.
