I have had had a theory since first watching The Last Jedi in regards to Maz sending Finn and Rose to Canto Bight to meet the Master Code Breaker.
Did Maz actually send them to meet DJ and used the Master Code Breaker as the pin point for them being in the right place to be arrested so they would meet DJ.
If you think about it, Maz is Force Sensitive and may have foreseen the events on Canto Bight. I’m not putting the back story that has been established between Maz and the Master Code Breaker at all, my thoughts are that he wouldn’t go near Finn and Rose or their mission BUT Maz knew he would be there, at that table at that time AND the badge he was wearing.
It seems a bit too coincidental that they looked all over the Casino and he just so happens to be playing at a table right where Finn and Rose meet before being arrested and then meet someone who is able to do the job they need doing IN the same cell they are stuck in.
To me it seems that it is ‘the will of the Force’ that they meet DJ rather than the Master Code Breaker, that DJ does the job and in the end fail their mission.
Many people have commented on how the Canto Bight sequence is pointless because it all leads to nothing but I found it refreshing to see our heroes go on a risky mission and then at the last moment it goes wrong. It’s almost a given that the risky missions, the attacks on both Death Stars and Starkiller Base were risky and in all honesty the heroes should not have succeeded because all of the odds were against them but they do and the one time it doesn’t work out people complain, but did it really fail?
Yes, the ‘failure’ led to the decimation of The Resistance but if the Resistance shuttles hadn’t been targeted then Holdo wouldn’t have performed the Holdo Manoeuvre and destroyed the majority of the First Order fleet which gave the Resistance a fleeting chance on Crait.
And it was ALL because Maz sent Finn and Rose to Canto Bight to locate the Master Code Breaker at that gaming table to get arrested and thrown in a cell with DJ.
As Qui-Gon Jinn says in The Phantom Menace,
“Our meeting was not a coincidence. Nothing happens by accident.”
